Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the yeast with half of the warm water (110°F) and set aside for 5 minutes until foamy, signaling the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare butter mixture: In a large bowl, add the thinly sliced butter, sugar, and salt. Pour the remaining warm water into this mixture and let it sit while the yeast activates, helping the butter soften.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: After 5 minutes, whisk the butter mixture until somewhat combined. Add the lightly beaten egg yolk and the foamy yeast mixture, stirring gently to integrate them.
  4. Add flour: Gradually stir in the all-purpose flour until just incorporated, forming a dough.
  5. Prepare the baking dish and rest dough: Brush a 9×13 inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Spread the dough evenly in the dish, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rest for 15 minutes to slightly rise.
  6. Preheat oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) so it’s ready for baking after the dough rests.
