Description

This Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken recipe offers tender, flavorful chicken simmered in a sweet and savory honey garlic sauce. Perfect for an effortless meal, the slow cooker gently melds the flavors, resulting in juicy chicken thighs or breasts served with a thickened, aromatic sauce garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken

  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce (or gluten-free soy sauce)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced or grated
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)

Thickening and Garnish

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (for thickening)
  • Green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Trim excess fat from chicken thighs if using, then pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Set aside to prepare the sauce.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together honey, soy sauce, minced garlic, grated ginger, rice or apple cider vinegar, and optional sesame oil until fully combined and smooth.
  3. Combine Chicken and Sauce: Place the chicken pieces into the slow cooker and pour the honey garlic sauce evenly over the chicken, ensuring each piece is coated well.
  4. Slow Cook the Chicken: Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6 to 8 hours until the chicken is tender and cooked through.
  5. Rest the Chicken: Once finished cooking, remove the chicken from the slow cooker and allow it to rest while you thicken the sauce.
  6. Thicken the Sauce: Mix the cornstarch with a small amount of cold water to create a slurry. Add this slurry to the sauce remaining in the slow cooker and cook on high for an additional 10 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  7. Serve and Garnish: Slice the rested chicken and pour the thickened honey garlic sauce over it. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • Trim excess fat for healthier cooking.
  • Use gluten-free soy sauce to make the dish gluten-free.
  • Sesame oil is optional but adds a nice depth of flavor.
  • Adjust the cooking time depending on whether you use thighs or breasts to avoid overcooking.
  • The sauce can be thickened to your preference with cornstarch slurry.
  • Serve over rice, noodles, or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal.
